Closed Door

The interiors of the room were beautiful. A vintage chest in one corner, an antique dressing table, linen curtains draping the windows, yet making way for sunlight and a huge mahogany bed…. which was flooded with piles of clothes……..

Meera (fuming): Ravi! Seriously…..do we have to do this everytime I have to go out? It’s an hour long drive, I should have been at the wedding venue with the rest of the family by now ……… For heaven’s sake it’s your niece’s wedding

………………….. Silence…………………..

Meera (agitated) : Don’t look at me like that …..this guilty as charged look won’t work this time…..the entire family blames me for being late all the time……… What do I tell them ?

Uhummm actually my husband makes me change at least 4 times … …Just to make sure I look perfect ……..“His perfect ”………. ( Wincing) I will be the laughing stock for all

…………………… Silence……………………

Meera: Oh God!… Sighs …… Ok now tell me is this saree fine?

(On Hearing footsteps coming towards the room)

Laughs nervously…….our daughter will disown me one of these days .

Nia ( Meera’s daughter) : (Barges into the room…… screaming) Mom! you are late again.

Meera: I am ready … let’s go

Nia(suspiciously):Who were you

talking to?

Meera: (walks pass Nia hurriedly)….. Now …now …. aren’t we getting late Missy? By the way ……you are allowed to drive fast today ……now hurry up

Nia ( rolls her eyes but affectionately smiles ): Scans the empty room one more time…….Looks at her deceased father’s photograph on the wall…….shakes her head in disbelief and quietly walks out of the room closing the door behind……….
